Even if your kids are little, it’s not too early to start praying for The Proposal, the biggest decision of their adult lives.
The man who finds a wife finds a treasure, and he receives favor from the Lord. Proverbs 18:22
Do you ever wonder what kind of people your children will end up marrying? What if you don’t get along with her? What if he’s not a good provider or seems lazy?
Questions like that drove us to our knees many years ago as we started praying for the spouses of our three kids. We didn’t pray about it daily, but over the years, it came up many times and each time we prayed for God to provide godly mates for our children.
Last weekend we saw the first answer to that prayer.
My oldest daughter got engaged. At 28, she’d waited a long time to find the right man. She’d been very picky about who she gave her heart to and when her man got down on his knees in the restaurant, surrounded by family from both sides and asked her to marry him, my heart was full with joy that God had answered our prayer for daughter #1. Two more to go!
Parents, it is never too early to begin praying for your children’s spouses. Here are some thoughts to guide you as you pray; Ask God to:
- Grow Him/Her into a godly mate who will love God wholeheartedly.
- Prepare their hearts to accept and love each other’s families.
- Keep them from harm and from making decisions that will have negative lifelong consequences.
- Mature them into spouses that will encourage each other’s walk with the Lord.
My daughter’s story is a beautiful one; she waited until she found a man who is like her dad, whom she adores. She made her fiance “work” for her, waiting until he moved across the country to pursue her, and she held back until she was sure that he was the godly man she wanted before she would even get serious with him.
So when The Proposal happened last Saturday, I was crying with her, tears of joy and celebration that God had answered our prayers for her.
