Parenting challenges do not just come in the form of dealing with difficult behaviors. Sometimes the biggest challenge is merely enjoying the “gifts” that are running around your home.
Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him. Psalm 127:3
Let’s be honest: parenting challenges can be overwhelming and there are days when you can do without the “gifts” and “rewards” that children bring. Am I right?
And even on good days, it is very easy to get bogged down in the duties of our parental job.
We have a household to run, a job to attend to, kids to feed and taxi around. There is always so much stuff to do in our parenting roles, that I think we often miss something very big.
We miss the delight.
As a noun, that word means “a high degree of pleasure or enjoyment, rapture.”
As a verb, it means “to take great pleasure in.”
Either way, we are prone to miss it because we are too caught up in our parenting duties and in the frustrations of our parental jobs.
Honestly, when was the last time you felt rapture with your child? When was the last time you were so silly and laughed so hard that your stomach hurt or that you felt you would pee your pants? When was the last time you got down on their level, looked deeply in their eyes and tried to see life from their perspective? When was the last time you let yourself let go, and said, “what the heck” I’m just going to enjoy being with my kids right now and be a kid myself?
I’m going to give you some homework this week. I want you to purpose at least 5 times to take some time to DELIGHT in your kids. To really enjoy who they are.
You may have to be intentional. It may take some planning or even some discipline to put everything else aside. But I’m sure you will be glad you did. You see, delighting in our kids not only means they are delighted to have our full attention, it means you get delight and joy and rapture out of the deal too. It’s a true parenting win-win.
This delighting in our kids is a reward all by itself. Try it and see how much joy it brings you, as well as your kids.
Do you feel stuck in a rut, and overwhelmed by the demands of parenting?
Not to mention wondering if you are doing the right things to help your children grow up to love and honor God?
