Teach your child what true leadership looks like in one simple word.
Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant. Matthew 20:26.
Have you ever been frustrated that your child didn’t show leadership? Whether it was on the sports team or in the classroom, or even just when playing with friends?
Leadership is a quality that can be encouraged in kids in many ways, but I’d like to focus on one leadership quality that is one of the most powerful–and probably most overlooked.
It didn’t even make the Forbes list of Top 10 leadership qualities:
- ability to delegate
- sense of humor
- positive attitude
- ability to inspire
These are all excellent qualities and I believe we should encourage our kids in each one, but unfortunately Forbes left out the one that I see as most important. And one that Scripture says is the key to truly being a leader. The problem is, it’s not the most popular choice.
That one overlooked leadership quality is serving.
Every really good leader that I’ve known has desired to serve the people he or she is leading. I’m sure Mother Theresa didn’t set out to become a great leader, she set out to serve others, and in doing so, became a great leader for the cause of compassion.
You can teach your kids how to be a leader by using the Top 10 Forbes list–as they grow older, these will be important if they want to lead–or you can start simply by helping them see that true leaders serve others.
