The cliffhangers in life will want to throw you mercilessly off the edge; but God promises to hold you as you navigate the drop.
Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7
How do you handle the cliffhangers that parenting throws at you?
I have a confession to make: I sometimes get caught up in watching a TV series on Netflix. Unlike when you watch a show on TV, on Netflix you have the power to keep watching and watching because you want to find out what happens at the end of each cliff-hanging episode. Sometimes I just have to keep watching the next show to find out what happens. I don’t like to be left wondering.
There are times when parenting leaves us with cliff-hangers. Only in real life, we don’t have the option to quickly find out how things will turn out, like on TV or in the movies. Real-life cliffhangers can drag on and all you can do it hang on until it resolves.
…When your child is seriously ill.
…When the money is running out and there’s too many bills to pay.
…When your kid is making poor friend choices and he won’t listen to your guidance.
The unfortunate truth is that sometimes you have to go to sleep not knowing whether your child will feel better in the morning. Sometimes you have to get up to face another day unsure about how you’re going to resolve the behavior issues your child is having. There are days when you wonder how you will stand not knowing which college your child will choose or if your child will do the right thing in a tough situation.
And that’s when 1 Peter 5:7 comes in to play. Casting your care on God is a mental and spiritual discipline, a choice you must make. When I feel anxiety creeping into my mind because of a cliffhanger I’m facing with one of my kids, I’ve learned to turn that worrysome thought into a prayer.
And you know what the funny thing is? Most of the time cliffhangers don’t turn out to be cliffhangers at all. What we feared often doesn’t happen; many cliff hangers are really only 2-feet drops. We fear the worst and most of the time, the worst never happens.
When you come to a cliff, with no clue how big or difficult the drop, cast your anxiousness on God; He promises to help you navigate the drop.
